O'Fallon, IL born actor won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in Stalag 17 (1953), and was nominated for that same award on two other occasions, for Sunset Blvd. (1950) and Network (1976). He starred opposite Barbara Stanwyck in Golden Boy (1939), and went on to appear in Invisible Stripes (1939), Our Town (1940), and Arizona (1940), among a handful of early releases before World War II. The bulk of Holden's career unfolded after his return from service when over the next several decades he appeared in major releases such as Born Yesterday (1950), Executive Suite (1954), Sabrina (1954), Picnic (1956), The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957), and The Wild Bunch (1969), plus those three aforementioned titles that earned Holden those nominations and the one Oscar trophy.
