London born actor best remembered as Ashley Wilkes in Gone With the Wind (1939). Howard received two Academy Award nominations for Best Actor for his performances in Berkeley Square (1933) and Pygmalion (1938), and starred in other classics such as Outward Bound (1930), with Mary Pickford in her final film Secrets (1933), opposite Bette Davis in her breakout role in Of Human Bondage (1934), The Scarlet Pimpernel (1934), from stage to screen with Humphrey Bogart in tow for The Petrified Forest (1936), and Michael Powell's 49th Parallel, among many others. Howard died tragically in a plane shot down by the Germans over the Bay of Biscay in 1943.
