Born in New York City to vaudeville parents, according to her New York Times obituary, a wardrobe trunk was very often her cradle. Hyams soon joined her parents on stage before later going on to some success in modeling. She made her film debut in 1924, and appeared in over fifty films between 1926 and the time of her retirement in 1936. Hyams is best remembered as leading lady in Tod Browning's infamous Freaks (1932). Other titles of note featuring Leila Hyams include Alias Jimmy Valentine (1928), The Big House (1930), Gentleman's Fate (1931), Red-Headed Woman (1932), Island of Lost Souls (1932), and Ruggles of Red Gap (1935).
