Atlanta, GA born actress is now remembered by many for her appearances as Josephine the Plumber in 1960s and '70s television commercials for Comet cleanser, but her fame began much earlier than that as a child star of 1930s Hollywood classics including her part as Shirley Temple's obnoxious tormentor in Bright Eyes (1934), and then leading roles in movies such as Ginger (1935), Little Miss Nobody (1936), Paddy O'Day (1936), High School (1940), and Shooting High (1940), among many others through the time of her retirement in 1947. A meeting with George Stevens led to her being cast as Vashti Snythe, a memorable supporting role in the epic adaptation of Edna Ferber's Giant (1956). Withers later made numerous appearances on television shows and, of course, those Comet commercials.
