Shop by the Stars aisle featuring George Arliss (1868-1946) vintage movie cards, still photos, ephemera, and other collectibles. Major London-born actor, got his start on stage in the late-1880s, eventually making his way to London by the turn of the century, and the US in 1901. Arliss made his film debut in The Devil (1921) and followed up with Disreali (1921), two of his greatest stage hits from years prior. He also remade Disreali (1929) as a talking picture and it brought him an Academy Award for Best Actor in ceremonies that also saw him nominated for The Green Goddess (1930). Arliss is surprisingly fun in a run of talkie comedies including titles such as The Millionaire (1931), A Successful Calamity (1932), The Man Who Played God (1932), The King's Vacation (1933), The Working Man (1933), and Mister Hobo (1935). He's also very good in the more dramatic The House of Rothschild (1934), though I find his Voltaire (1933) a bit slow. Underappreciated actor, who can never be recalled as he was at his peak on the stage, but thankfully we have plenty of surviving films to enjoy him in.
