Franchot Tone

Niagara Falls, NY born actor was active on Broadway beginning 1927, made his film debut working at Paramount's Astoria studios in The Wiser Sex (1932), before turning to the movies full time for several years after signing with MGM. Tone received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor in a Leading Role for his performance in Mutiny on the Bounty (1935). Other popular films featuring Franchot Tone include The Lives of a Bengal Lancer (1935) with Gary Cooper, Dangerous (1935) opposite Bette Davis, Suzy (1936) starring Jean Harlow, Five Graves to Cairo (1943), and, much later, as the President in Advise & Consent (1962). Joan Crawford was the first of Tone's four wives. They appeared together in seven films, including Dancing Lady (1933), Sadie McKee (1934), and The Bride Wore Red (1937). Tone's later television career included a memorable appearance on The Twilight Zone and a supporting role during the last couple of seasons of Ben Casey.
