London-born Barnes started out in England as a chorus girl and vaudeville performer before appearing in a number of screen shorts opposite Stanley Lupino. Her most important early role came as the King's fifth wife in Alexander Korda's The Private Life of Henry VIII (1933). She also appeared in Korda's The Private Life of Don Juan (1934) before coming to Hollywood to begin a successful run, most often as a supporting actress, in late 1934.
